VHV goes to Neko Again

| April 4, 2011 | 0 Comments

Quite a few years ago I wrote a review on Neko Japanese restaurant located in Wappingers Falls, NY. At that time we ate in their hibachi dining room. This go around, we opted for the general dining room and ate sushi instead. I wish our sushi dining experience were as favorable as our hibachi experience. Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

Neko’s Sushi

The food was marginal at best. The spicy Maki sushi was loosely wrapped and not spicy. I’ve got to say that the vegetable spring roll appetizer was tasty, and my husband liked his shrimp dumpling appetizer. If we knew what was to follow, we would have stopped there, called it a night, paid the check and left…but we didn’t.

The Service

There’s no nice way to say this. The service was poor. It was barely existent. We looked around and wondered how the service would have been if the restaurant were packed. We couldn’t understand why the service was so poor since 40 to 45% of the tables were empty.

In past visits we ate at Neko’s hibachi tables where the food was prepared in front of us. The service in the hibachi room was always right on the mark. The service in the general dining area, however, was severely lacking.

Neko’s Entertainment

The entertainment (live jazz) was laughable. Being one who grew up listening to Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and the like, the one man band that sang/played/tapped and beat boxed at Neko’s was not jazz in my opinion. He did a “jazz” rendition of a Mick Jagger song (for the life of me I can’t remember the name of the song…or maybe I blocked it out for self preservation), but that was not jazz.

To top it off, the speaker was too loud for the size of the dining room. The patrons dining at Neko that night were seated at the booths and tables furthest away from the entertainment. When we got there, the available tables were too close to the speaker so we opted to eat in the bar area.

Sticking to My Guns

When I first had a hankering for sushi, I thought of Chen Youngs. However, my husband convinced me to go to Neko instead. I think I’ll end this review by saying that I’ve never had an unsatisfactory sushi meal at Chen Youngs.

Interesting Tidbit: After writing this review, I went to Neko’s website and clicked on their “Reviews” link. It seems that Neko was given 4 and 5 star reviews in the past, but their last favorable review was in 2008 (the same year of our last review). Makes a person wonder what has happened between 2008 and now.
