Fishkill AllSport Zumba Parties

| March 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

On Friday night, March 4, 2011, Fishkill AllSport sponsored a Zumba party. The party was held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the 17 Old Main St location. The class was free for member and $10 for non members.

The Zumba class took place in the gym (basketball court). In the center of a gym was a platform on which the instructor stood and 360° surrounding the instructor was the Zumba party.

What is Zumba?

Zumba is a form of exercise. It’s a dance class performed to Latin beats. If you’ve never danced to Latin music before, don’t worry. If you close your eyes and allow the rhythms to work, your body will naturally follow. However, if you’re not comfortable closing your eyes in a room full of strangers, watch the instructor.

The instructor demonstrates the dance move and uses hand signals to direct you left, right, front or back. Additionally, though hand signals, she’ll tell you how many times to repeat certain moves.

Sampling of Zumba StylesZumba

At the Zumba party, Fishkill AllSport gave it’s participants a sampling of three very different Zumba dance styles. There were four instructors that worked as a tag team. Each instructor added her own Zumba dance flair.

Dance Style Number One

The first instructor had more of a Irish River Dance type of style. Her movements concentrated more on fancy foot work. Not ever having performed the River Dance, I now have a new appreciation as to the amount of work that goes into doing what looks like a simple dance move. My legs got a great workout.

Dance Style Number Two

The second Zumba instructor introduced a hip-hop dancing style to the floor. Hip Hop style dancing has more deliberate moves. The combination of the arm movements and fancy footwork can work up a good sweat, especially if you allow yourself to become one with the music (mentally envision yourself on a hip-hop stage dancing for the masses).

Dance Style Number Three

The third dance style was the style most true to the musical genre. With the waist winding, hip gyrating, arms flowing movements of the Salsa, Meringue, Calypso, dance moves, it was a natural flow and hand in glove fit for the type of music. There were two instructors that brought their own dance flavor to the music. The movements ranged from the Beyonce “bootilicious bounce” to the more fluid salsa, calypso style movement. ZumbaBottom line, it was a very enjoyable workout.

Final Thoughts on Zumba

The hour and a half long class is not for the feint of heart. It’s a full body workout that will make you sweat if you put your all into it. Another positive feature to the Zumba party is that it was a no criticism zone. Even if you didn’t catch onto the moves as quickly as your neighbor, it’s all good. Everyone was there to get in shape and have a good time while doing it. After taking a moment to look around the class at my Zumbamates, it seemed that everyone was having as much fun as I had.

If you missed this Zumba party, not to worry; Fishkill AllSport hosts Zumba parties once a month. Check out their website to see when they’ll host the next one.

A side note: The Zumba class is a nice compliment to the AllSport spinning classes. Spending an hour or so dancing does much to loosen the lower back after an hour of bending over the handle bars of a spinning bike.

Update: The next AllSport Zumba party will be held on Friday, April 1st.  Hope to see you there!
